Siemens 4210 - Spindle declaration as rotary axis missing

Spindle declaration as rotary axis missing

If a machine axis is to be operated as a spindle, this machine axis must be declared as a rotary axis Control reaction: NC not ready. Mode group not ready, also effective for single axes. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 4210 occurs when a machine axis assigned as a spindle in the NC program lacks the required rotary axis declaration in the machine data configuration. The SINUMERIK 840D requires explicit rotary axis classification (MD20050 - axis type) before an axis can function as a spindle, regardless of its functional assignment in part programs.

Safety

  • Spindle hazard: ensure the spindle is at standstill before working near it; follow lockout/tagout procedures.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Siemens SINUMERIK 840D HMI > Maintenance > Machine Data > Axis-specific parameters. Locate the affected axis (referenced as %2 in alarm message).

  2. 2

Verify MD20050 (Axis type) value: must be 2 (rotary axis, modulo capable) or 3 (rotary axis, modulo not capable). If set to 1 (linear axis), change to 2 for standard spindle operation.

Changing axis type requires NCK reset and program reload; coordinate with production.

  3. 3

Confirm MD20090 (Modulo range) is populated correctly if MD20050=3 (typically 360 degrees for standard spindles).

  4. 4

Save machine data (MD backup recommended), reset NCK via Siemens HMI (Maintenance > Reset > Soft Reset), and re-test spindle activation with G97/G96 command.
