Siemens 300004 - Axis drive wrong drive type (FDD/MSD)

Axis drive wrong drive type (FDD/MSD)

A feed module is inserted in the rack location determined by the drive logic number, but in the corresponding NCK-specific MD 13040 DRIVE_TYPE, a main spindle is defined (or vice versa) Control reaction: NC not ready. The NC switches to follow-up mode. Channel not ready. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

SINUMERIK alarm 300004 Drive Overtemperature occurs when the drive module's internal temperature exceeds the threshold defined in MD1400 (temperature monitoring parameters). This typically results from inadequate cooling, excessive load conditions, or drive hardware degradation affecting thermal management.

Safety

  • Drive/power/encoder circuit: hazardous voltages may remain in the DC link after power-off. Lock out / tag out, wait for discharge per the drive documentation, and use qualified personnel only.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Drive Cabinet Cooling

Navigate to HMI > Diagnostics > Drive > Temperature Display to verify current drive temperatures against MD1400 limits.

Normal operating temperature should be 20-30°C below the alarm threshold

  2. 2

    Inspect Cooling Fans

Physically inspect all cabinet cooling fans for operation. Check fan status in Service > Drive > Hardware Status menu.

Ensure cabinet power is locked out before accessing internal components

  3. 3

    Clean Heat Exchangers

Remove accumulated debris from drive heat sinks and air filters. Check air flow paths are unobstructed.

Use compressed air at low pressure to avoid damaging sensitive components

  4. 4

    Verify Ambient Temperature

Ensure cabinet ambient temperature is within specification (typically <40°C). Check MD1402 for ambient temperature monitoring if equipped.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Drive hardware replacement required
  • ·Repeated alarms after cooling system repair
  • ·Temperature sensors giving inconsistent readings

Prevention

  • Schedule regular cooling system maintenance
  • Monitor drive loading through HMI trending
  • Maintain proper cabinet ambient temperature
  • Replace air filters quarterly

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual temperature increases
  • Operating with failed cooling fans
  • Incorrect motor parameter settings
  • Blocking cabinet ventilation during maintenance
