Okuma OSP Alarm B 2173 - MCS Motor overheat

MCS Motor overheat

The control detected that the temperature of the named axis motor (or spindle motor) is abnormally high. Depending on the code, the overheat was sensed at the motor itself, at the position encoder (BL motors sense overheat through the encoder), or both. Motion is stopped to prevent motor winding damage.

Common Causes

  • VAC motor cooling fan failed or heat sink clogged with dirt/chips
  • High-frequency CW/CCW reversals and stops overheating the motor
  • BL motor internal fault
  • Faulty motor encoder giving a false or genuine overheat reading (BL motor overheat is detected via the encoder)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 0010 = Motor overheat detected; code 0011 = Overheat detected at the motor; code 0012 = Overheat detected at the position encoder; code 0013 = Overheat detected at both the motor and the encoder
  2. 2Read the ZZZZ portion of the code: 0010 = motor overheat, 0011 = overheat detected at the motor, 0012 = overheat detected at the position encoder, 0013 = overheat detected at both motor and encoder. This tells you where the temperature was sensed.
  3. 3Allow the motor to cool, then check the VAC motor cooling fan is running and clean the heat sink of dust, oil and chips.
  4. 4Review how the machine was being run: frequent CW/CCW reversals and stops at high frequency will overheat the motor — reduce the reversal duty or add dwell and see if the alarm stays away.
  5. 5Feel/verify actual motor temperature if safely possible; if the motor is cool but the alarm persists with code 0012/0013, suspect the motor encoder's temperature detection on a BL motor.
  6. 6If cooling and duty are correct and the motor genuinely overheats, the BL motor itself is suspect; record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
