Okuma OSP Alarm B 2167 - MCS Encoder with shaft initialization failure

MCS Encoder with shaft initialization failure

The MCS drive failed to complete initialization of the encoder-with-shaft fitted to the axis or spindle named in the object field. Because initialization happens at power-up or drive reset, the fault is usually in the encoder, its link cable, or the inverter control board rather than a running condition.

Common Causes

  • Faulty encoder with shaft
  • Encoder link cable or connector loose, damaged, or contaminated
  • Faulty inverter unit control board

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Note the object: if an axis name is shown, work on that axis encoder; if none, it is the spindle encoder.
  2. 2Lock out main power and let the drive discharge, then inspect the encoder link cable from the encoder to the inverter unit: reseat both connectors and look for crushed sections, coolant ingress, or bent pins.
  3. 3Check the encoder mounting for looseness or signs of impact/coolant that could have damaged the encoder with shaft.
  4. 4Power up and see whether initialization completes; if the same axis fails again with a known-good cable, replace the encoder with shaft.
  5. 5If a new encoder does not clear the alarm, the inverter unit control board is the remaining suspect; record the alarm number, code, and object and contact Okuma service.
