Okuma OSP Alarm B 2165 - MCS Encoder initialization failure

MCS Encoder initialization failure

The MCS inverter failed to initialize the motor encoder over the encoder link for the axis or spindle named in the object. Without valid encoder feedback the axis cannot run, and the failure occurred during one of the link startup steps identified by the code.

Common Causes

  • Faulty motor encoder
  • Loose, damaged or contaminated encoder link cable or connector
  • Defective inverter unit control board
  • Encoder/parameter mismatch (e.g. multi-rotation detection range or communication version incompatible after an encoder or board swap)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XX=0 = Error during reset; code XX=1 = Error during network address setting; code XX=2 = Error requesting basic communication information; code XX=3 = Error changing communication version; code XX=4 = Error acquiring device information; code XX=5 = Error during parameter change; code XX=6 = Error at AT (auto) mode start; code YY=0 = Communication error; ZZZZ shows encoder link error status C2ERR
  2. 2Record the full XXYYZZZZ code: XX is the link sequence step at failure (e.g. 2 = requesting basic communication info, 6 = AT mode start), YY is the error type, ZZZZ is supporting data.
  3. 3YY=0, 1, 2 or 3 (communication error or transmit/receive timeouts): with power locked out, inspect and reseat the encoder link connectors at the motor encoder and inverter unit; check the cable for damage, sharp bends or coolant contamination.
  4. 4YY=4 (abnormal response address): ZZZZ shows the responding device's network address — check for a wiring mix-up or duplicate address on the encoder link.
  5. 5YY=6 (parameter error): ZZZZ identifies the cause (1=missing parameters, 2=incompatible basic communication info, 3=multi-rotation detection range mismatch) — suspect an incorrect or incompatible replacement encoder or control board.
  6. 6If cable and connectors check out, replace the motor encoder; only after that replace the inverter unit control board.
