Okuma OSP Alarm B 2164 - MCS Encoder detected error

MCS Encoder detected error

The motor encoder has become unable to detect positional data for the axis or spindle named in the object field. The encoder hardware itself reported an error, and the code details the encoder type's error code, detailed status, and multi-turn data.

Common Causes

  • Motor encoder internal failure
  • Encoder cable or connector damage
  • Multi-turn position data exceeded the rotating range

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XX = Encoder error code depending on the encoder type; code YY = Detailed encoder status, varies with encoder type; code ZZZZ = Multi-turn position data, shown when multi-turn data exceeded the rotating range
  2. 2Note the axis or spindle named in the object field, then read the code: XX is the encoder error code depending on encoder type, YY is the detailed encoder status (varies with encoder type), and ZZZZ is the multi-turn position data shown when the multi-turn data exceeded the rotating range.
  3. 3Lock out power and inspect the motor encoder connector and cable on the named axis for damage, coolant ingress, or loose pins.
  4. 4Check the encoder cable routing for sharp bends or pull stress in the drag chain.
  5. 5Power up and see if the error returns immediately (hard failure) or only after movement (cable/intermittent).
  6. 6If cabling is good, the motor encoder is the probable faulty location; replace it per the manual.
