An axis move, steady rest advance/retract, turret index, or spindle rotation command was executed while the steady rest clamp/open/position conditions did not permit it — for example moving XB/ZB/W with the steady rest not unclamped, or starting the spindle with the steady rest closed but not at its advance end. The control blocked the motion to prevent a collision between the steady rest, turret, and rotating workpiece.

Okuma OSP Alarm A 1789 - Steady rest interlock
Steady rest interlock
An axis move, steady rest advance/retract, turret index, or spindle rotation command was executed while the steady rest clamp/open/position conditions did not permit it — for example moving XB/ZB/W with the steady rest not unclamped, or starting the spindle with the steady rest closed but not at its advance end. The control blocked the motion to prevent a collision between the steady rest, turret, and rotating workpiece.
Common Causes
Axis (XB/ZB/W/XA/ZA) or turret traverse commanded while the steady rest open/unclamp confirmation is OFF
Steady rest advance/retract or close command issued while the steady rest clamp or saddle clamp confirmation is OFF
Spindle rotation commanded with the steady rest closed but not at the advance end, or the steady rest left the advance end during rotation
Steady rest ON/OFF switch set OFF (or steady rest not at the B-turret index position) while a traverse or door command was issued
Faulty steady rest open/closed/advance-end/clamp confirmation switch or wiring
Troubleshooting Steps
1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Turret traverse commanded with the XB/ZB/W-carriage or turret-B steady rest open confirmation OFF.; code 2 = Relieving type steady rest traverse commanded with the steady rest open confirmation OFF.; code 3 = Steady rest command issued during spindle rotation.; code 4 = Spindle rotation commanded or running with the steady rest closed (or advance-end) confirmation OFF.; code 7 = Steady rest traverse commanded with the steady rest switch set OFF.; code 8 = Steady rest traverse commanded with the steady rest clamped confirmation OFF.; code 9 = Steady rest close commanded with the steady rest saddle clamped confirmation OFF.; code 11 = XB-carriage steady rest: turret indexing position free command issued.
2Read the alarm code on screen to identify which steady rest condition blocked the command, then correct that specific state before retrying.
3Code 1/2/21/22/52/59: do not traverse the carriage/turret/W-axis until the steady rest is unclamped and the steady rest open confirmation is ON — open/unclamp the steady rest first.
4Code 3/47: stop spindle rotation before issuing a steady rest command or arm unlock command.
5Code 4: before starting the spindle, confirm the steady rest is closed and at its advance end (for relieving type, closed or at advancing limit); if the steady rest opened during rotation, check the advance-end and closed confirmation switches.
6Code 7/48/63: check the steady rest ON/OFF (effective) switch setting matches the actual mounted state of the steady rest.
7Code 8/9/61: verify the steady rest clamp and saddle clamp confirmations are ON before traverse, close, or cutting-feed commands; if clamped physically but the signal is OFF, inspect the clamp confirmation switch and its connector.
8Code 43/54/55/56: index the B-turret to the pot position carrying the steady rest and set XB to the designated position before turning the steady rest switch ON or operating the door.
9If the physical state and the confirmation signals disagree after these checks, record the alarm number and code and contact Okuma service.
