Okuma OSP Alarm A 1741 - Chuck unclamp

Chuck unclamp

A spindle or M-tool spindle rotation command was given while the chuck was open, or the chuck close confirmation signal dropped out while the spindle was turning. The control stopped rotation because turning with an unclamped chuck risks throwing the workpiece.

Common Causes

  • Operation error: rotation commanded before closing the chuck (codes 1, 3)
  • Faulty chuck close limit switch or incorrect dog position causing the close signal to drop (codes 2, 4)
  • Locater not at retract end or its retract signal lost during rotation (code 13)
  • Chuck close, face driver, finger/collet chuck, or air chuck clamp signal lost during spindle, M-tool, or C-axis rotation

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = Spindle rotation commanded with the chuck open; code 2 = Chuck close signal turned OFF during spindle rotation; code 3 = M-tool spindle rotation commanded with the chuck open; code 4 = Chuck close signal turned OFF during M-tool spindle rotation; code 7 = Spindle rotation commanded while the tailstock was being unclamped; code 8 = Spindle chuck was unclamped during spindle rotation; code 9 = Spindle speed exceeded the parameter-set limit with ceiling door open and a chuck interlock release pending; code 10 = Spindle speed exceeded the parameter-set limit with front door open and a chuck interlock release pending (optional release types)
  2. 2Read the code shown with the alarm: codes 1/3 mean rotation was commanded with the chuck open; codes 2/4 mean the chuck close signal was lost during rotation.
  3. 3For codes 1 or 3: close the chuck first, then re-issue the spindle or M-tool spindle rotation command.
  4. 4For codes 2 or 4: check the chuck close limit switch and its dog. Actuate the chuck and watch the close signal on the I/O monitor; if the signal flickers or never sets, adjust the dog position or replace the limit switch.
  5. 5For code 13: retract the locater fully to its retract end before commanding spindle rotation, and verify the locater retract signal stays ON.
  6. 6For the other codes (face driver, finger/collet chuck, tailstock chuck, front/rear air chuck), confirm the named device is actually clamped/retracted and that its confirmation switch input is steady during rotation.
  7. 7If it returns after these checks, record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
