Okuma OSP Alarm P 0785 - MCS Rotary encoder 4 initialization failure

MCS Rotary encoder 4 initialization failure

The MCS servo control could not complete its power-up initialization handshake with rotary encoder 4, a HEIDENHAIN encoder fitted to the axis named in the alarm object. Because the encoder never reports ready, the control cannot establish position feedback for that axis and the machine will not run.

Common Causes

  • Failed HEIDENHAIN rotary encoder 4 (internal electronics not responding to the initialization request)
  • Damaged or disconnected encoder cable/connector between encoder 4 and the MCS drive
  • Contamination or moisture inside the encoder connector interrupting the serial interface

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Note the axis named in the [Object] field so you know which motor/encoder 4 belongs to before opening anything.
  2. 2Power down and lock out the machine; wait for the drive DC bus to discharge before touching connectors.
  3. 3Inspect the cable and connector of rotary encoder 4 (HEIDENHAIN) on that axis: reseat the connector, check for bent pins, coolant ingress, or a pinched cable run, then power up and see if initialization completes.
  4. 4If the wiring is sound, swap or substitute a known-good HEIDENHAIN encoder 4 if available to confirm the encoder itself is at fault.
  5. 5Replace rotary encoder 4 (HEIDENHAIN) per the manual's corrective action, then cycle power and verify the axis initializes and references normally.
  6. 6If the alarm persists with a new encoder, record the alarm number and object axis and contact Okuma service, as the MCS drive's encoder interface channel may be faulty.
