KUKA Robot KRC0537 - Change of direction not possible

Change of direction not possible

This alarm indicates that the robot controller cannot execute a requested change in motion direction within the programmed constraints or physical limitations of the robot. This typically occurs during dynamic motion transitions when the velocity, acceleration, or deceleration parameters conflict with the robot's kinematic capabilities or when the axis cannot reverse direction due to mechanical restrictions.

Common Causes

  • Acceleration or deceleration ramp parameters set too aggressively for the requested direction change
  • Velocity profile exceeds axis maximum speed capabilities during direction reversal
  • Axis mechanical limits or soft limits preventing the required motion direction
  • Conflicting motion commands in rapid succession without adequate settling time between direction changes
  • Incorrect tool center point (TCP) offset causing kinematic singularities or unreachable positions during transition

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Review the motion program logic and verify the sequence of movement commands does not request instantaneous direction changes
  2. 2Reduce the acceleration and deceleration rates in the affected axis parameters and increase transition time between opposing motions
  3. 3Check the programmed velocity values against the axis maximum speed specifications in the robot's technical documentation
  4. 4Verify axis soft limits and mechanical limits are properly configured and not preventing the required motion direction
  5. 5Inspect the TCP offset and tool payload settings to ensure kinematic feasibility throughout the motion trajectory
  6. 6Test the motion with reduced speed settings (PROG mode, speed override <50%) to confirm proper execution, then gradually increase speed
