KRC0352

KUKA Robot KRC0352 - ACKN. OVERTEMPERATURE, BALLAST RESISTOR <number> OR FAN

ACKN. OVERTEMPERATURE, BALLAST RESISTOR <number> OR FAN

The ballast resistor in the motor drive electronics has exceeded safe operating temperature limits due to continuous duty cycle without adequate cooling periods. This typically occurs when the robot performs repetitive acceleration and deceleration sequences without sufficient rest intervals, causing thermal stress on the feedback resistor or cooling fan components.

Common Causes

  • Continuous rapid acceleration and deceleration cycles without programmed dwell time or motion pauses
  • Inadequate cooling airflow around the drive cabinet or blocked ventilation grilles
  • Malfunctioning cabinet cooling fan preventing proper heat dissipation from ballast resistors
  • Excessive ambient temperature in the robot installation environment exceeding design specifications
  • Worn or degraded ballast resistor components reaching end of service life

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Allow the drive electronics to cool for 30 minutes with power on but no motion commands executed
  2. 2Verify that the drive cabinet cooling fan is operating and that ventilation grilles are not obstructed by dust or debris
  3. 3Review the KRL program cycle time and add programmed motion pauses or reduced acceleration rates to distribute thermal load
  4. 4Check ambient temperature around the robot and drive cabinet against the installation manual specifications, ensure proper HVAC operation
  5. 5Inspect the ballast resistor and cooling fan components using WorkVisual diagnostics and thermal imaging to identify failing components
  6. 6Contact KUKA service or replace the ballast resistor assembly if diagnostics confirm component degradation
