KUKA Robot KRC0071 - KCP DEADMAN SWITCH

KCP DEADMAN SWITCH

The deadman safety switch on the KUKA smartPAD was released while the robot was actively moving an axis in T1 or T2 teach mode. Continuous pressure on the deadman switch is required during any programmed motion to maintain safe operation in these modes.

Common Causes

  • Operator released the deadman switch while moving the robot due to fatigue or distraction during extended teach sessions
  • Deadman switch became stuck or failed mechanically, releasing mid-motion
  • Operator hand slipped off the teach pendant during rapid axis jog movements
  • Programming error caused unexpected axis motion while the deadman switch was not actively depressed
  • Electrical contact failure in the deadman switch creating intermittent loss of signal to the safety controller

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Stop robot motion immediately and ensure all axes are in a safe resting position
  2. 2Perform a visual and tactile inspection of the deadman switch on the smartPAD to check for mechanical damage or sticking
  3. 3Test the deadman switch function by depressing it fully and confirming continuous electrical contact during a jog movement
  4. 4If the switch feels worn or unresponsive, replace the smartPAD or the deadman switch module according to KUKA maintenance procedures
  5. 5Verify teach mode safety settings in the controller configuration to ensure deadman monitoring is enabled
  6. 6Resume teaching operations only after confirming the deadman switch responds properly and maintaining continuous contact during motion
