HEIDENHAIN 230-001A - A parameter change requires the drive to be switched off (axis)

A parameter change requires the drive to be switched off (axis)

During reconfiguration or parameter-set switching, a parameter was altered that demands the drive to be off beforehand. The change was not accepted.

Root Cause Summary

The TNC control has detected a parameter modification in the drive configuration that cannot be applied while the drive inverter is powered and operational. This is a protective mechanism to ensure drive parameters are properly initialized during the power-up sequence, preventing potential drive faults or motor damage from incompatible runtime parameter changes.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Identify Changed Motor Parameters

Navigate to MOD > System Parameters > Axes > [Affected Axis] > Motor. Review parameters such as motorType, motorRatedCurrent, motorPolePairs, or motorTable entries. Compare against previous backup or documentation.

Press HELP key while cursor is on parameter to see detailed description and valid value ranges specific to your TNC version.

  2. 2

    Verify Parameter Compatibility

Cross-reference the changed parameter values with the actual motor nameplate data. Ensure motor type codes match the installed motor (synchronous vs. asynchronous, frameless, etc.).

Incorrect motor parameters can cause thermal overload, reduced torque, or motor damage. Always verify against motor documentation.

  3. 3

    Execute Controlled Power Cycle

Enter PLC STOP mode, engage Emergency Stop, turn OFF main cabinet power. Wait minimum 10 seconds for capacitor discharge. Power ON and allow complete boot sequence. The drive will initialize with new parameters.

Ensure no workpiece collision risk exists before referencing axes after parameter changes.

  4. 4

    Perform Test Reference

After power-up, manually reference the affected axis in MDI mode. Monitor for smooth motion, proper reference point acquisition, and absence of current alarms or motor cogging.

Use MOD > Diagnosis > Axes > [Axis] > Position Monitor to observe actual vs. commanded position during initial moves.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter changes affect machine safety systems
  • ·Multiple axes showing simultaneous parameter conflicts
  • ·Encoder or feedback hardware replacement required

Prevention

  • Always disable drives before modifying critical parameters
  • Use parameter backup before making configuration changes
  • Follow proper parameter set switchover procedures

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting parameter changes during active machining
  • Not identifying which specific parameter triggered the alarm
  • Forgetting to re-enable drives after parameter modification
