Haas 411 - RS-232 EMPTY PROG | Haas CNC Alarm

RS-232 EMPTY PROG

This alarm is generated when the control attempts to receive a program via RS-232 serial communication but no data arrives within the expected timeout period. The MOCON board monitors the serial input buffer and triggers this fault when the receive operation is initiated but the buffer remains empty, indicating no transmission was started or the cable connection failed before any data arrived. Program memory is not affected and the machine remains idle.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 411 POCKET FULL occurs when the spindle orientation system fails to position the spindle to the correct angular position for tool changes within the timeout period. This typically results from encoder feedback issues, mechanical binding in the orientation mechanism, or incorrect Parameter 311 (orient offset) settings.

Safety

  • Do not force tool into pocket

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Encoder Signals

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > DIAGNOSTICS > SPINDLE and observe encoder A, B, and Z channel signals during manual spindle rotation.

Z-channel should pulse once per revolution - if missing or erratic, encoder replacement is needed

  2. 2

    Inspect Encoder Connections

Power down machine and check encoder cable connections at both spindle encoder and drive module. Look for loose, corroded, or damaged pins.

Always power down before checking electrical connections

  3. 3

    Test Encoder Continuity

Using multimeter, verify continuity on encoder cable pins, particularly Z-channel signal wire. Check for shorts between signal wires.

    Encoder resistance should typically read 120 ohms between A+ and A-, B+ and B-, Z+ and Z-

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Spindle drive module failure
  • ·Mechanical binding in spindle bearings

Prevention

  • Regular spindle belt inspection and replacement
  • Periodic orientation calibration
  • Keep spindle area clean of debris

Common Mistakes

  • Adjusting Parameter 311 without proper calibration procedure
  • Ignoring mechanical binding symptoms
  • Not checking encoder signals before replacing expensive components
