HAAS Alarm 43 - Spindle Motor Overtemperature Shutdown

Spindle Thermal Overload Protection Triggered

This alarm activates when the spindle drive detects excessive heat in the spindle motor windings or the spindle drive module itself, typically monitored by thermistors or temperature sensors feeding the MOCON board. The spindle drive shuts down immediately to prevent permanent damage to motor windings or drive components. Machine will not allow spindle operation until the thermal condition clears and the alarm is reset.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 43 fires when the spindle motor's internal thermistor detects temperatures exceeding the thermal protection threshold, typically around 155°C (311°F). The NGC control monitors spindle temperature through the spindle drive and automatically triggers this alarm to prevent motor winding damage from overheating conditions.

Safety

  • Do not attempt to reset spindle temperature alarm manually; respect cooling time for motor protection
  • Keep hands and loose clothing away from spindle area during operation to avoid contact burn injury
  • Do not increase spindle RPM or cutting load immediately after thermal alarm; allow stabilization period

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Coolant System Operation

Press [COOLNT] on the control panel and verify coolant flow at the spindle. Check coolant tank level and ensure pump is running.

Never run spindle without adequate coolant flow during heavy cutting operations.

  2. 2

    Inspect Coolant Lines and Nozzles

Remove spindle shroud and check for kinked coolant lines, clogged nozzles, or debris blocking coolant passages to the spindle motor housing.

Use compressed air to blow out coolant passages - chips often accumulate in the spindle cooling channels.

  3. 3

    Verify Coolant Concentration

Test coolant mixture ratio with refractometer. Haas recommends 5-10% concentration for optimal heat transfer and corrosion protection.

Poor coolant mixture reduces heat transfer efficiency and can cause thermal buildup.

  4. 4

    Clean Coolant System

If coolant is contaminated or has poor flow, drain system, clean tank, and refill with fresh coolant mixture per Haas specifications.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Spindle bearing noise detected
  • ·Excessive spindle runout measured
  • ·Drive parameter issues suspected
  • ·Repeated thermal alarms after coolant system verification

Prevention

  • Maintain proper coolant concentration and flow
  • Monitor spindle load percentage during heavy cuts
  • Replace cutting tools before excessive wear
  • Keep electrical cabinet filters clean
  • Schedule regular spindle bearing inspections

Common Mistakes

  • Running spindle immediately after alarm clears without cooling time
  • Ignoring gradual increases in spindle load percentage
  • Using excessive cutting parameters to meet production demands
  • Neglecting coolant system maintenance
  • Operating with inadequate shop ventilation during hot weather
