HAAS Alarm 47 - Tool Carousel Position Misalignment

Automatic Tool Changer Index Position Error

The automatic tool changer has failed to index to the correct pocket position as verified by the ATC positioning sensor input to IOCON. The MOCON control expects specific timing and sensor feedback during the tool change cycle, and this alarm triggers when the carousel or turret does not reach the commanded position within the allowable time window. Machine will abort tool change sequence and require manual intervention to clear.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 47 occurs when the ATC carousel position sensor fails to detect the carousel at the expected tool station during indexing. The NGC control cannot verify proper carousel alignment, preventing the tool gripper from accessing the selected tool slot.

Safety

  • Do not manually force carousel rotation beyond normal resistance; stop and inspect for mechanical damage
  • Keep hands and fingers clear of carousel mechanism during automatic indexing motion
  • Ensure machine is in emergency stop condition before accessing carousel proximity switches

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Position Sensor Status

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > ATC and observe carousel position display during manual rotation to identify sensor dropout.

Ensure spindle is stopped and ATC door is closed before manual carousel operation

  2. 2

    Clean Position Sensors

Remove chips and coolant buildup from all carousel position proximity sensors using compressed air and clean cloth.

Check sensor gap - should be 0.030" to 0.050" from target surface

  3. 3

    Verify Sensor Alignment

Manually rotate carousel and verify each position sensor properly aligns with its target flag on the carousel assembly.

Loose sensor mounting can cause intermittent position detection failures

  4. 4

    Test Sensor Operation

Use DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS to monitor position sensor input status while manually indexing carousel through each station.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Carousel motor failure
  • ·Control board issues
  • ·Major mechanical repairs needed

Prevention

  • Regular carousel lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Keep position sensors clean and properly gapped
  • Maintain proper tool weight distribution
  • Perform monthly ATC reference cycles

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual position drift
  • Over-lubricating carousel bearings
  • Incorrect sensor gap adjustment
  • Running ATC with damaged tools that cause binding
