Haas Alarm 5 - Machine Not Zeroed

Not Zeroed

This alarm appears when the operator attempts to run a program or enter certain modes without first establishing machine zero reference positions through the homing cycle. The MOCON board tracks whether each axis has successfully completed its home routine and found the proximity switch reference point since the last power-up. Until all required axes show a valid zero reference, the control restricts certain operations to prevent crashes or coordinate system errors that could result from unknown machine position.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 5 fires when the way lubrication oil level drops below the minimum threshold detected by the float-style level switch in the way oil reservoir. The NGC control continuously monitors this sensor and prevents machine operation when insufficient lubrication is detected to protect linear guideways and ballscrews from damage.

Safety

  • Position accuracy unknown

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Oil Level Visually

Open electrical cabinet and locate the way oil reservoir tank. Check oil level against minimum mark on tank sight gauge.

Ensure machine is powered off and locked out before opening electrical cabinet

  2. 2

    Add Approved Way Oil

Add only Haas-approved way oil (Mobil Vactra #2 or equivalent ISO VG 68) to bring level above minimum mark but below maximum.

Fill slowly to avoid overfilling - excess oil can cause over-lubrication issues

  3. 3

    Reset Alarm and Test

Press RESET button to clear alarm. Cycle power if alarm persists. Verify float switch operation by gently lifting float manually.

Listen for relay click when float moves past switch point

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Float switch replacement required
  • ·Internal pump failure suspected
  • ·Persistent leaks after repair attempts

Prevention

  • Check way oil level weekly during daily maintenance
  • Use only Haas-approved way oil (ISO VG 68)
  • Replace oil filter per maintenance schedule
  • Keep reservoir tank and float switch clean

Common Mistakes

  • Using incorrect oil viscosity
  • Overfilling reservoir causing float switch issues
  • Ignoring small leaks that lead to low oil conditions
  • Not cleaning float switch during oil changes
