Haas Alarm 410 - Tool Missing From Pocket

TOOL NOT IN POCKET

This alarm occurs when the control detects a mismatch between the expected tool pocket location and the actual tool presence during a tool change operation. The MOCON board monitors tool changer arm position sensors and pocket sensors through the IOCON, and triggers this fault when a requested tool is not found in its programmed pocket location. The machine will stop mid-cycle to prevent damage from attempting to load a nonexistent tool into the spindle.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 410 - Tool Not In Pocket typically occurs when the CNC machine expects a tool to be in a specific magazine pocket but finds it missing. The most common cause is that the tool is already in the spindle or has been manually removed, and the quickest fix often involves locating the tool and updating the tool table accordingly.

Safety

  • Verify tool locations

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Inspect Spindle

Visually check if the missing tool is currently loaded in the spindle. Ensure the machine is in a safe state (power off or E-stop engaged) before inspection.

Use a flashlight to check the spindle if lighting is poor in the machine enclosure.

Do not reach into the spindle area while the machine is powered on.

  2. 2

    Return Tool to Magazine

If the tool is in the spindle, manually or automatically (via MDI command) return it to the correct pocket in the tool magazine as per the tool table data.

Double-check the pocket number in the tool table before returning to avoid further errors.

Ensure proper tool orientation when placing it back to avoid jamming.

  3. 3

    Update Tool Table

Access the control panel, navigate to the tool table, and confirm or update the tool's location to match the physical setup. Reset the alarm after updating.

Take a screenshot or note of the tool table before and after changes for documentation.

Incorrect tool table data can cause further alarms or crashes.

Call a technician if:

  • ·If sensor replacement or electrical troubleshooting is required and you lack training.
  • ·If the tool magazine pocket retention mechanism is damaged beyond simple repair.

Prevention

  • Always update the tool table after manually removing or relocating tools.
  • Implement a strict tool tracking system to log tool movements.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain tool magazine pocket retention mechanisms.
  • Schedule periodic sensor cleaning and testing as part of preventive maintenance.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to update the tool table after manual tool changes, leading to recurring alarms.
  • Ignoring sensor warnings or debris buildup, which can cause false readings over time.
