Haas 271 - C SERVO OVERLOAD | Haas CNC Alarm

C SERVO OVERLOAD

This alarm is triggered when the C-axis servo amplifier detects continuous excessive current draw that exceeds thermal limits for an extended period. The servo amp monitors motor current and calculates accumulated heat in the motor windings, shutting down when the thermal model indicates overload conditions. This protects both the servo motor and amplifier from damage due to sustained overwork.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 271 DC Bus Low occurs when the rectified DC voltage in the servo drive power supply drops below the minimum threshold, typically due to incoming AC power issues, power supply component failure, or excessive load conditions. This protective alarm prevents servo amplifier damage by shutting down motor operation when insufficient DC bus voltage is detected.

Safety

  • Drives may trip

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Incoming AC Voltage

Use multimeter to measure all three phases at the main disconnect. Verify 208-240V systems have 200-250V per phase, 460-480V systems have 440-500V per phase.

Use proper PPE and lockout procedures when measuring high voltage

  2. 2

    Verify Phase Balance

Measure voltage between all phase combinations (L1-L2, L2-L3, L1-L3). Voltage imbalance should be less than 2% between phases.

Phase imbalance over 3% can cause DC bus instability even with acceptable individual phase voltages

  3. 3

    Check Power Quality

Monitor voltage stability under load using oscilloscope or power quality analyzer. Look for voltage sags, spikes, or harmonic distortion during machining operations.

  4. 4

    Inspect Electrical Connections

Check all incoming power connections at main disconnect, transformer, and machine input terminals for looseness, corrosion, or overheating signs.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·DC bus voltage measurements required
  • ·Servo drive disassembly needed
  • ·High voltage electrical work
  • ·Capacitor replacement required

Prevention

  • Install power line conditioning equipment
  • Perform annual electrical connection inspections
  • Monitor DC bus capacitor age and replace proactively
  • Maintain proper lubrication schedules

Common Mistakes

  • Not checking all three phases for balance
  • Ignoring power quality issues
  • Attempting capacitor work without proper discharge procedures
  • Replacing individual capacitors instead of complete bank
