Haas 272 - C-AXIS MOTOR OVERHEAT | Haas CNC Alarm
Haas Alarm 272 DC Bus High occurs when the DC bus voltage exceeds the safe operating threshold, typically 400-420VDC on NGC systems. This is commonly caused by regenerative energy from rapid deceleration not being properly dissipated through the dynamic braking resistor or power supply feedback issues.
Haas 272 - C-AXIS MOTOR OVERHEAT | Haas CNC Alarm
C-AXIS MOTOR OVERHEAT
This alarm indicates the C-axis motor or spindle motor thermal sensor has detected excessive temperature during rotary positioning operations. The MOCON board monitors the thermistor embedded in the motor windings and triggers this fault when temperature exceeds safe operating limits. The machine will halt C-axis indexing and may disable spindle rotation until the motor cools below the threshold temperature.
Root Cause Summary
Haas Alarm 272 DC Bus High occurs when the DC bus voltage exceeds the safe operating threshold, typically 400-420VDC on NGC systems. This is commonly caused by regenerative energy from rapid deceleration not being properly dissipated through the dynamic braking resistor or power supply feedback issues.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Check Dynamic Brake Resistor Connections
Power down machine and inspect the dynamic brake resistor connections on the main drive module. Look for loose, corroded, or burnt connections at terminals DB+ and DB-.
Ensure main power is OFF and wait 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before touching any connections.
Test Resistor Continuity
Using a multimeter, measure resistance across the dynamic brake resistor. Should read approximately 47-68 ohms depending on machine size. Open circuit indicates failed resistor.
Resistor should be cool to touch - if hot during normal operation, it may be undersized or failing.
Inspect Resistor Physical Condition
Visually inspect the resistor housing for cracks, burn marks, or physical damage. Check mounting hardware for looseness which can cause poor heat dissipation.
Dynamic brake resistors typically last 3-5 years in normal machining applications.
