Haas Alarm 3 - Emergency Stop Active

E-Stop

This alarm indicates the emergency stop circuit has been opened, either by pressing an E-Stop button or by an interruption in the E-Stop safety chain wiring. The MOCON board monitors the E-Stop circuit continuity through the PSUP power supply board, and when interrupted it immediately kills power to all servo amps and spindle drive. The machine requires reset and homing after clearing this fault.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 3 E-Stop occurs when the NGC controller detects an open condition in the 24VDC emergency stop safety circuit loop. This hardwired series circuit includes all E-stop buttons, door interlocks, light curtains, and safety relay contacts - any break in continuity immediately triggers this alarm and prevents all machine motion.

Safety

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Visual inspection of all E-stop buttons

Check main control panel E-stop, pendant E-stop, and any auxiliary E-stops for physical engagement or damage.

Never bypass or disable E-stop functionality for troubleshooting

  2. 2

    Test E-stop button release mechanism

Rotate each E-stop button clockwise to ensure proper release. Check for mechanical binding or damaged spring return mechanism.

E-stop buttons should have audible click and visible pop-out when released properly

  3. 3

    Verify E-stop contact continuity

With power off, use multimeter to check continuity across E-stop contacts when released. Should read 0 ohms resistance.

Disconnect 24VDC power before testing contacts

  4. 4

    Check E-stop wiring connections

Inspect wire connections at E-stop terminals for looseness, corrosion, or damage. Verify proper wire gauge and terminal crimps.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Safety relay module replacement required
  • ·Complex wiring repairs needed
  • ·Multiple safety devices failing simultaneously

Prevention

  • Test E-stop buttons monthly during preventive maintenance
  • Keep door switches clean and properly adjusted
  • Inspect safety circuit wiring during routine maintenance
  • Replace E-stop buttons every 3-5 years as preventive measure

Common Mistakes

  • Bypassing safety devices instead of proper repair
  • Not checking all E-stop buttons in system
  • Ignoring intermittent door switch issues
  • Assuming alarm is controller fault rather than safety circuit issue
