Haas Alarm 303 - Invalid X, Y, or Z in G02/G03

Invalid Arc Parameters

This alarm is generated when the MOCON detects invalid or conflicting parameters in a circular interpolation move using either IJK or R notation for G02 or G03 commands. Common issues include mismatched start and end point radii when using IJK notation, mixing IJK and R in the same block, or arc geometry that exceeds the control calculation limits. The machine stops execution at the faulty block to prevent incorrect tool motion.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 303 fires when the NGC control detects mathematically invalid arc parameters in G02/G03 commands, typically due to inconsistent I/J/K center point definitions or R-format radius values that don't match the programmed start and end points. The control's arc interpolation algorithm cannot resolve a valid circular path from the given geometric constraints.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Calculate Arc Geometry

Measure the distance from start point to center (I/J/K) and end point to center - these radii must be identical within the control's tolerance (typically 0.0002").

Use CAM software's arc verification tools or manual trigonometric calculations to validate geometry before posting code.

  2. 2

    Check Parameter 33 Arc Tolerance

Access SETTING > PARAMETERS > enter 33 > verify arc tolerance setting (default 0.0002). Increase slightly if dealing with imported geometry from CAD systems.

Increasing arc tolerance beyond 0.001" may affect part accuracy and surface finish.

  3. 3

    Reprogram Arc Command

Edit the G02/G03 line with corrected I/J/K values or convert to R-format (G02 X__ Y__ R__) to let the control calculate the center point automatically.

  4. 4

    Verify with Graphics

Use GRAPHICS mode to visually verify the arc path before running the program - invalid arcs will show as straight lines or erratic paths.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter 33 corruption suspected
  • ·Persistent alarms after geometry verification
  • ·Control software calculation errors

Prevention

  • Always verify arc geometry in CAM software before posting
  • Use consistent arc format (I/J/K or R) throughout programs
  • Set Parameter 33 arc tolerance appropriately for part requirements

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing I/J/K and R formats in same arc command
  • Programming arcs with mismatched start/end radii
  • Ignoring active coordinate system scaling effects on arc geometry
