Tool changer communication error detected

This alarm indicates the MOCON has lost communication with the tool changer interface board or the ATC carousel motor controller. The MOCON sends position and tool change commands via discrete I/O and serial communication to the tool changer hardware, and this alarm fires when expected acknowledgment signals are not received within the timeout period. The machine will halt all tool change operations and may stop program execution to prevent crashes or incorrect tool loading.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 31 occurs when the NGC control loses communication with the tool changer system, typically due to loose connections at the tool changer junction box, faulty communication cables, or corrupted tool changer parameters. The alarm fires when the control cannot establish proper handshake protocols with the ATC module during tool change operations.

Safety

  • Do not attempt manual tool changes during Alarm 31; unexpected tool changer movement could occur during reset
  • Power must remain off while inspecting or repairing tool changer wiring to prevent electrical shock
  • Ensure spindle is completely stopped and cooled before accessing tool changer area

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Power down and lockout machine

Turn main disconnect OFF and follow lockout/tagout procedures before accessing electrical connections.

High voltage present - ensure complete power isolation before proceeding

  2. 2

    Inspect tool changer junction box

Remove the junction box cover on the spindle head and visually inspect all connections for looseness, corrosion, or coolant contamination.

Use dielectric grease on connections in high-coolant environments

  3. 3

    Clean and reseat connections

Disconnect, clean with contact cleaner, and firmly reseat all connections in the junction box, paying special attention to the communication cable connectors.

Take photos before disconnecting to ensure proper reassembly

  4. 4

    Test communication

Power up machine and test tool change operation. Monitor for alarm recurrence during multiple tool changes.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·ATC control board replacement required
  • ·Oscilloscope testing needed
  • ·Multiple causes suspected
  • ·Safety concerns with electrical work

Prevention

  • Regular inspection of junction box connections
  • Keep cable tracks clean and properly lubricated
  • Maintain proper coolant containment to prevent electrical contamination
  • Perform monthly tool changer calibration checks

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring loose connections in junction box
  • Not checking cable continuity when intermittent
  • Forgetting to recalibrate after parameter changes
  • Working on electrical connections with power on
