Haas Alarm 280 - Pneumatic Air Pressure Low

Air Pressure Low

This alarm occurs when the air pressure switch monitored by the IOCON board detects insufficient pneumatic pressure to safely operate machine functions requiring compressed air such as tool changer, drawbar, and optional accessories. The pressure switch typically opens below 60 PSI triggering the fault. All air-dependent operations are disabled including automatic tool changes and the machine will not allow cycle start until adequate pressure is restored.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 280 fires when the pneumatic pressure switch on the main air manifold detects system pressure below 80-85 PSI threshold. The NGC control immediately disables axis motion, spindle drawbar, and ATC operations to prevent incomplete tool clamping or pneumatic actuator damage.

Safety

  • Always depressurize the pneumatic system and lock out air supply before disconnecting fittings or removing components to prevent unexpected actuator movement or air blast injury.
  • Do not attempt to manually override or bypass the pneumatic pressure switch—operating with insufficient air pressure can result in incomplete tool clamping, tool ejection during cutting, and serious machine damage or personal injury.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Shop Air Pressure

Verify shop air supply gauge reads 90-100 PSI minimum at the machine connection point.

Never exceed 120 PSI maximum shop air pressure to avoid damaging pneumatic components.

  2. 2

    Inspect Air Line Connection

Check that 1/4" NPT shop air line is properly connected to machine air inlet fitting and valve is fully open.

Listen for air leaks at connection points - even small leaks can cause pressure drops under load.

  3. 3

    Test Compressor Recovery

Cycle ATC or drawbar several times to verify shop compressor can maintain pressure during high-demand operations.

If pressure drops below 85 PSI during cycling, compressor may be undersized for machine requirements.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Pressure switch replacement required
  • ·Internal pneumatic cylinder repairs needed
  • ·ATC pneumatic system overhaul required

Prevention

  • Maintain shop air pressure above 100 PSI
  • Replace pneumatic filter every 6 months
  • Install automatic filter bowl drain
  • Perform monthly leak checks on pneumatic system

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual pressure drops
  • Operating with marginal shop air pressure
  • Not draining filter bowl regularly
  • Assuming alarm is always electrical when it's usually pneumatic supply
