Haas 270 - C SERVO ERROR TOO LARGE | Haas CNC Alarm

C SERVO ERROR TOO LARGE

This alarm occurs when the C-axis servo amplifier reports a position following error that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold set in parameters. The MOCON monitors the difference between commanded position and actual encoder feedback, and if this error grows beyond limits (typically 2-5 degrees), the alarm fires. This indicates the C-axis rotary table cannot maintain accurate position tracking during programmed moves.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 270 fires when the lithium backup battery voltage drops below 3.0V as monitored by the NGC control's internal voltage detection circuit. This battery maintains SRAM contents including parameters, work offsets, stored programs, and macro variables during power-off conditions.

Safety

  • Replace before data loss
  • Machine will lose positions if battery dies

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check Battery Voltage

Access DIAGNOSTICS > BATTERY to view current battery voltage. Normal reading should be 3.2V or higher.

Battery voltage may appear normal under load but drop when tested - check multiple times

  2. 2

    Power Down and Replace Battery

Turn off main power, open electrical cabinet, locate lithium battery on CPU board, and replace with identical specification battery.

Ensure main power is completely off before battery replacement to prevent data corruption

  3. 3

    Restore Machine Data

Power up machine, clear alarm, and restore parameters, work offsets (G54-G59), and programs from backup files via RS-232 or USB.

Always verify critical parameters like backlash compensation and spindle calibration after battery replacement

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Battery replacement doesn't resolve alarm
  • ·Rapid battery drain indicates CPU board failure
  • ·Multiple related system alarms present

Prevention

  • Replace battery every 3-4 years preventively
  • Maintain electrical cabinet temperature below 104°F
  • Create regular backups of all machine data via memory card or RS-232
  • Monitor battery voltage monthly in DIAGNOSTICS menu

Common Mistakes

  • Replacing battery with power on causing data corruption
  • Not restoring backlash compensation parameters after battery replacement
  • Using incorrect battery type or voltage rating
  • Failing to backup machine data before battery replacement
