Spindle Drive Fault

This alarm indicates the spindle drive module has detected an internal fault condition and has shut down to protect itself and the spindle motor. The MOCON receives a fault signal from the spindle drive via the control cabinet wiring, triggering this alarm. The spindle will not run until the fault condition is cleared and the drive resets successfully.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 27 fires when the spindle VFD detects a fault condition such as overcurrent, overvoltage, or communication loss with the NGC control. The alarm is triggered by the VFD's internal fault monitoring system reporting status back to the control through the spindle drive interface.

Safety

  • Spindle VFD may contain high voltage and stored energy, observe proper lockout before service
  • Do not attempt to reset VFD or spindle breaker repeatedly if fault persists, risk of equipment damage
  • Ensure spindle is mechanically locked before performing manual rotation diagnostics

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check VFD Display Panel

Examine the VFD display on the electrical cabinet for fault codes. Common codes include OC (overcurrent), OH (overheat), or UV (undervoltage).

Ensure main power is ON but spindle is not running before opening electrical cabinet

  2. 2

    Reset VFD Fault

Press the RESET button on the VFD display panel or cycle Parameter 37 (SPINDLE ENABLE) from OFF to ON in SETTING menu.

If fault immediately returns, do not continue resetting as this indicates a persistent hardware issue

  3. 3

    Check Spindle Load

Verify no excessive cutting loads, damaged tooling, or spindle binding that could cause overcurrent conditions.

Manually rotate spindle by hand (power OFF) to check for mechanical binding

  4. 4

    Inspect VFD Cooling

Clean VFD heat sinks and verify cooling fans are operational. Check for blocked air vents in electrical cabinet.

Allow VFD to cool for 30 minutes before handling heat sinks

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·VFD module replacement required
  • ·Spindle motor replacement needed
  • ·Control board communication issues persist
  • ·Electrical power supply modifications required

Prevention

  • Regular VFD heat sink cleaning
  • Monitor spindle load conditions
  • Maintain proper coolant levels to prevent motor overheating
  • Perform periodic encoder cable inspection

Common Mistakes

  • Repeatedly resetting VFD without identifying root cause
  • Ignoring VFD fault codes displayed on drive
  • Operating with loose electrical connections
  • Not checking motor insulation during preventive maintenance
