Haas 122 - REGEN OVERHEAT | Haas CNC Alarm

REGEN OVERHEAT

This alarm triggers when the regenerative resistor bank overheats during rapid deceleration of servo axes. When servos decelerate quickly, they generate electrical energy that flows back into the DC bus; this energy is dissipated as heat through the regen resistors mounted on the PSUP or servo amplifier assembly. The MOCON monitors a thermal switch or temperature sensor on the resistor assembly and faults when the temperature exceeds safe limits to prevent resistor failure or fire hazard.

Root Cause Summary

Haas Alarm 122 occurs when the ATC carousel has lost its home position reference, typically due to encoder feedback issues, mechanical binding, or power interruption during tool change cycles. The NGC control cannot determine the carousel's rotational position relative to the spindle, preventing safe tool changes.

Safety

  • Tool may overheat

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check ATC encoder connections

Navigate to CURRENT COMMANDS > ATC and verify encoder feedback signals. Check connector X15 on the main control board for loose or corroded pins.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before checking electrical connections

  2. 2

    Verify encoder operation

In DIAGNOSTICS > INPUTS, monitor ATC encoder signals while manually rotating carousel. Look for consistent pulse train from encoder channels A and B.

Encoder signals should show clean square waves without dropouts or noise

  3. 3

    Test encoder power supply

Check +5VDC supply to encoder at terminal strip. Voltage should be 4.75-5.25VDC with machine powered on.

Use proper DMM with high impedance to avoid loading encoder circuits

  4. 4

    Replace encoder if faulty

If encoder shows no output or erratic signals, replace the ATC position encoder and perform ATC calibration procedure per Haas service manual.

Always perform Parameter 310 (ATC CAROUSEL POCKETS) verification after encoder replacement

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Motor replacement needed
  • ·Mechanical binding cannot be resolved
  • ·Multiple electrical components failing

Prevention

  • Regular ATC lubrication per schedule
  • Keep ATC area clean of chips
  • Monitor battery voltage monthly
  • Perform weekly ATC operation checks

Common Mistakes

  • Forcing carousel rotation when bound
  • Using wrong lubricant type
  • Ignoring encoder signal quality
  • Not checking home sensor alignment after maintenance
