Haas Alarm 1211 - Tool Setter Arm

Tool Setter Arm

This alarm indicates the tool setter arm (touch probe) failed to retract or extend properly during a tool measurement cycle. The MOCON monitors the tool setter arm position via a proximity sensor on the IOCON board and expects the arm to move within a set time window. When the sensor does not detect the correct position within the timeout period, the machine stops to prevent collisions between the spindle and the extended probe arm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1211 occurs when the tool setter arm fails to reach its commanded position within the timeout period monitored by the NGC control. The control expects position feedback from proximity sensors within a specific time window after energizing the pneumatic solenoid valve.

Safety

  • Setter not accessible
  • WARNING: Tool setter is not accessible during this fault condition
  • Ensure the machine is in emergency stop before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting on the tool setter arm.
  • Disconnect power to the machine before working on any electrical components.
  • Be aware of potential pinch points when working around the tool setter arm mechanism.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and gloves.
  • Compressed air can be dangerous. Use caution when working with air lines and fittings. Always depressurize the system before disconnecting any air lines.
  • The tool setter arm may move unexpectedly. Keep hands and other body parts clear of the arm's path during operation and testing.
  • If the tool setter arm is stuck, do not force it. Forcing the arm could cause damage to the mechanism or injury to personnel.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check air pressure gauge

Verify shop air pressure at the machine is between 80-120 PSI. Check the pressure gauge on the main air supply and at the machine's air filter/regulator unit.

Ensure machine is in E-STOP before checking pneumatic connections.

  2. 2

    Inspect air filter and regulator

Check the air filter bowl for excessive moisture or contamination. Verify the regulator is set to proper pressure (typically 80-90 PSI for tool setter operation).

Drain the filter bowl daily in humid environments to prevent moisture buildup.

  3. 3

Test air flow to tool setter

Locate the pneumatic line feeding the tool setter cylinder and check for adequate air flow. Listen for air leaks around fittings and connections.

Use soapy water to identify small air leaks that may not be audible.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Proximity sensor replacement required
  • ·Pneumatic cylinder internal failure
  • ·Solenoid valve replacement needed
  • ·Electrical cabinet wiring issues

Prevention

  • Maintain proper air pressure and filter condition
  • Keep tool setter area clean of chips and coolant
  • Perform weekly tool setter function test
  • Monitor I/O diagnostics during preventive maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring low air pressure warnings
  • Not checking both proximity sensors
  • Forcing stuck pneumatic components
  • Overlooking loose electrical connections in I/O cabinet
