Haas Alarm 1210 - Tool Setter Error

Tool Setter Error

The tool setter error alarm occurs when the spindle-mounted tool setting probe fails to communicate properly with the control system or the probe hardware has detected a fault condition. The MOCON board manages the probe signals and will trigger this alarm if the expected probe response is not received during a tool measurement cycle or if internal probe diagnostics indicate a problem.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 1210 occurs when the tool setter probe fails to send a trigger signal during G31 skip moves in tool measurement cycles. The control expects a skip signal from the probe contact but receives none before reaching travel limits or timeout thresholds, indicating hardware failure in the probe signal chain or incorrect macro/parameter configuration.

Safety

  • Tool length not set
  • WARNING: Tool length offset not established - verify tool measurements before machining
  • Disconnect power to the machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting.
  • Be careful when manually moving the machine axes. Avoid collisions with the tool setter or other machine components.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris.
  • Ensure the machine is properly grounded to prevent electrical shock.
  • Lock out/tag out the machine before performing any maintenance or repairs.
  • Be aware of pinch points when working around the tool setter arm.
  • Always disconnect power before performing physical inspections to avoid electrical hazards.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Visual inspection of probe stylus

Navigate to HANDLE JOG mode and visually inspect the tool setter probe stylus for chips, coolant buildup, or physical damage.

Ensure spindle is stopped and machine is in safe position before inspection

  2. 2

    Clean probe stylus

Use compressed air and lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol to clean the probe stylus and contact surfaces, removing any coolant residue or debris.

Clean both the stylus tip and the mounting surfaces - contamination anywhere in the contact path will prevent signal transmission

  3. 3

    Manual probe test

Press CURRENT COMMANDS, then MDI, enter M75 (probe on) followed by manual stylus deflection while monitoring the PROBE LED on the control panel.

The PROBE LED should illuminate when stylus is manually deflected and extinguish when released

  4. 4

    Verify probe spring action

Manually deflect the probe stylus in multiple directions to ensure smooth spring return action and proper mechanical operation.

Use gentle pressure only - excessive force can damage the precision probe mechanism

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Control input card replacement required
  • ·Probe replacement needed
  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory reset

Prevention

  • Regular probe cleaning and inspection
  • Periodic cable connection checks
  • Backup parameter settings before changes
  • Monitor probe signal quality during routine maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to activate probe with M75 before testing
  • Incorrect parameter 6181 skip input selection
  • Testing with excessive feedrates causing crashes
  • Not checking cable routing through machine movement
