Fanuc Alarm PS0056 - Canned Cycle Plane Error

Wrong Plane in Cycle

Fanuc PS0056: WRONG PLANE IN CYCLE. The drilling or canned cycle was commanded in a plane that is not compatible with the selected cycle or the current plane selection.

Root Cause Summary

FANUC PS0056 occurs when a canned cycle (G73, G74, G76, G80-G89) is commanded without a proper plane selection (G17/G18/G19) or when the active plane is incompatible with the canned cycle axis specification. The control expects the canned cycle drilling/boring axis to be perpendicular to the selected work plane, and this alarm triggers when this geometric relationship is violated.

Safety

  • Tool may drill wrong direction

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the NC program at the line triggering PS0056. Check if G17 (XY plane), G18 (ZX plane), or G19 (YZ plane) is commanded before the canned cycle block.

  2. 2

Navigate to CURRENT (POSITION screen) and verify the active G-code modal state. Press the SYSTEM softkey, then CURRENT. Check Group 02 for active plane code (G17/G18/G19).

  3. 3

Insert the appropriate plane selection code in the program before the canned cycle. For vertical machining (Z-axis drill): use G17. For horizontal machining (X or Y-axis drill): use G18 or G19 accordingly.

  4. 4

Verify parameter 5101 bit 4 (G17/G18/G19 plane selection valid) is set to 1. Access via SYSTEM > PARAM > [5101] and confirm bit configuration allows plane selection commands.

Changing parameter 5101 requires parameter write enable (PWE) bit 0 in setting 8. Incorrect settings may affect all program geometry.
