Fanuc Alarm PS0018 - Work Coordinate Error

Program Origin Error

Fanuc PS0018: PROGRAM ORIGIN ERROR. An error was detected in a program origin setting or coordinate system definition. The work coordinate or origin offset has an illegal value.

Root Cause Summary

PS0018 Work Coordinate Error occurs when the CNC detects an invalid work coordinate system specification (G54-G59, G54.1) or an illegal program origin setting that exceeds allowable ranges defined in system parameters. This alarm is typically triggered by coordinate values exceeding stroke limits, corrupted work offset data, or parameter conflicts between coordinate system settings and machine configuration.

Safety

  • Wrong position reference possible

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to OFFSET screen > WORK (G54-G59) and verify all axis values in the active work coordinate system. Note any unusually large positive or negative values that may be erroneous data entry.

  2. 2

Check SYSTEM > PARAM and review parameters 1320 (X+ stroke), 1321 (Y+ stroke), 1322 (Z+ stroke), 1326 (X- stroke), 1327 (Y- stroke), 1328 (Z- stroke). Confirm work offset + program coordinates do not exceed these limits.

  3. 3

Access POSITION screen > ABSOLUTE display and verify current machine position. Calculate total position (absolute position + work offset + programmed move) to confirm it remains within stroke parameters.

  4. 4

If work offset data is corrupted or incorrect, correct the values in OFFSET > WORK screen or reload from backup. Alternatively, set parameter 1201#0 (OFC) to 1 to enable offset write capability if protected.

Changing parameter 1201#0 requires power cycle to take effect. Ensure proper backup before modifying work offset data.
