Fanuc Alarm PS0017 - Missing Sign in Program

No Plus/Minus

Fanuc PS0017: N-DIGIT ERROR. Too many digits were specified in the sequence number (N-number) in the part program. Fanuc limits the size of N-numbers.

Root Cause Summary

PS0017 occurs during program verification when the control detects a missing mandatory plus (+) or minus (-) sign in a program statement, or when a signed value is used in a context where only unsigned values are valid. This is a syntax error typically found in coordinate values, offsets, or parameter-based programming statements that require explicit sign designation.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press ALARM key to view full alarm message and note the displayed program line number (Nxxxx) and O-number where PS0017 occurred.

  2. 2

Navigate to EDIT mode, search for the flagged program block, and examine coordinate values (X, Y, Z, U, V, W, A, B, C) and offset values (H, D codes) for missing + or - signs, especially after address letters.

  3. 3

Check parameter 3404#0 (ISC) which controls incremental/absolute sign requirements. If set to 1, incremental commands (G91) may require explicit signs. Verify programming matches parameter setting.

Changing parameter 3404 affects all incremental programming syntax machine-wide

  4. 4

Correct the program by adding explicit + or - signs where required (e.g., change 'X100.0' to 'X+100.0' or 'X-100.0' if mandatory), save the program, reset alarm with RESET key, and re-verify program syntax.
