Fanuc 550 - Spindle stop error

SPINDLE STOP ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 550: SPINDLE STOP ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 550 indicates the spindle failed to decelerate and stop within the programmed time limit after receiving a stop command. This is typically caused by mechanical binding, brake system failure, or incorrect deceleration parameters that don't allow adequate stopping time for the spindle inertia load.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check spindle brake air pressure at the gauge (typically 5-6 bar/70-85 psi). Verify solenoid valve clicks when spindle stop is commanded.

Ensure machine is in emergency stop before inspecting brake components

  2. 2

Inspect brake pads/disc for excessive wear, glazing, or contamination from oil/coolant. Measure pad thickness against manufacturer specifications.

  3. 3

Test brake release mechanism by manually rotating spindle with brake applied (power off). Should require significant force if brake is functioning.

Lock out power and verify spindle is stopped before manual rotation

  4. 4

Replace brake pads if worn below 2mm or contaminated. Clean brake disc with brake cleaner and verify proper air cylinder operation.
