Fanuc 555 - Spindle chuck interlock

SPINDLE CHUCK INTERLOCK

Fanuc spindle alarm 555: SPINDLE CHUCK INTERLOCK. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 555 SPINDLE CHUCK INTERLOCK indicates the machine control has detected that the spindle chuck clamping/unclamping cycle is not completing properly, or the chuck pressure confirmation signals are not being received. This is a safety interlock to prevent spindle rotation when the chuck is not properly secured or when workpiece holding cannot be verified.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check the PMC ladder or I/O diagnostics screen to identify which chuck confirmation signal is missing (typically chuck clamp confirm or unclamp confirm).

  2. 2

Verify hydraulic or pneumatic pressure at the chuck actuator meets specification (typically 20-30 bar for hydraulic systems). Check pressure gauges and look for leaks in lines or rotary union.

Ensure spindle is stopped and machine is in a safe state before checking pressures.

  3. 3

Inspect the chuck pressure switch or proximity sensor for physical damage, proper mounting position, and electrical continuity. Test sensor output with a multimeter while manually actuating if possible.

  4. 4

Check wiring from the chuck confirmation sensors through the rotary union/slip ring assembly to the machine control for breaks, shorts, or connector corrosion. Pay special attention to the rotary union connections which experience wear.
