Fanuc 556 - Spindle tool clamp error

SPINDLE TOOL CLAMP ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 556: SPINDLE TOOL CLAMP ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 556 indicates the spindle drawbar mechanism failed to properly clamp or unclamp the tool holder. This is typically caused by insufficient hydraulic/pneumatic pressure, faulty proximity switches detecting drawbar position, or mechanical obstruction in the tool clamping mechanism.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check air pressure at machine supply - verify minimum 6 bar (87 psi) for pneumatic systems or hydraulic pressure per machine specs.

  2. 2

Inspect air filter/regulator unit for clogging or water accumulation - drain and clean if necessary.

  3. 3

Manually actuate the drawbar solenoid valve and listen for air flow or pressure change - replace valve if defective.

Lockout machine and verify spindle is stopped before manual valve actuation.

  4. 4

Check for air/hydraulic leaks in lines from valve to spindle drawbar cylinder - repair or replace damaged fittings or seals.
