Fanuc 553 - Spindle speed range error
Alarm 553 indicates the commanded spindle speed exceeds the allowable range for the current gear position or spindle configuration. This occurs when the CNC attempts to command a speed outside the valid min/max parameters set in the spindle drive or when gear selection doesn't match the speed range.
Fanuc 553 - Spindle speed range error
SPINDLE SPEED RANGE ERROR
Fanuc spindle alarm 553: SPINDLE SPEED RANGE ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 553 indicates the commanded spindle speed exceeds the allowable range for the current gear position or spindle configuration. This occurs when the CNC attempts to command a speed outside the valid min/max parameters set in the spindle drive or when gear selection doesn't match the speed range.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Check current gear position indicator on the machine display or spindle drive. Verify it matches the speed being commanded (low gear for low speeds, high gear for high speeds).
For automatic gear shift spindles, manually command a gear change using M41/M42 (or M43/M44 if 4-gear) and observe if the gear actually shifts. Listen for mechanical engagement.
Ensure spindle is stopped before commanding gear changes
Inspect spindle parameters 3741-3744 (gear position detection) and 3731-3734 (speed range limits for each gear). Verify commanded speed falls within the active gear's range.
Check gear shift solenoid operation, hydraulic/pneumatic pressure for gear actuator, and gear position switches/proximity sensors. Clean or replace faulty sensors.
Lockout machine power when inspecting mechanical components
