Fanuc 549 - Spindle sequence error

SPINDLE SEQUENCE ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 549: SPINDLE SEQUENCE ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 549 indicates the spindle amplifier has detected an improper command sequence or the spindle did not respond correctly to orientation, gear change, or speed commands. This typically occurs when M-codes are issued out of sequence, the spindle fails to complete orientation within the timeout period, or there is a mismatch between commanded and actual spindle state feedback.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check the spindle orientation sensor (magnetic pickup or proximity switch) for proper mounting gap (typically 0.5-1.0mm) and clean any debris or coolant buildup.

  2. 2

Monitor the spindle orientation signal (ORCMA or ORCMB) on the SPM amplifier diagnostics screen during manual orientation command (M19). Verify the signal activates within 2-3 seconds.

  3. 3

Verify parameter 4077 (orientation timeout) is set appropriately (typically 5000-10000ms). If spindle is slow to orient, temporarily increase this value to isolate mechanical vs. sequence issues.

Do not set timeout excessively high as this may mask mechanical problems

  4. 4

Check ladder logic for proper M19/M-code interlock sequence. Ensure no custom macro or ladder modification is sending conflicting spindle commands simultaneously.
