Fanuc Alarm 503 - Y Axis Negative Overtravel

Overtravel -Y

Stored stroke check alarm. The axis has exceeded the stored stroke limit -Y as defined in parameter 1320-1327.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 503 occurs when the machine attempts to move beyond the negative software limit defined in parameter 1323 (Stored Stroke Check II). This is a secondary software overtravel protection that monitors accumulated position against stored travel limits, indicating either incorrect limit parameters, position loss, or an errant program command driving the axis past safe boundaries.

Safety

  • Jog slowly away from limit
  • Verify position after recovery

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 1323 for the affected axis (n). Verify the negative limit value matches machine mechanical limits and application requirements.

  2. 2

Compare parameter 1323 with parameter 1320 (Stored Stroke Check I negative limit). Parameter 1323 should typically be equal to or slightly beyond 1320 to act as a secondary boundary.

  3. 3

Check bit 0 of parameter 1300 (bit 0 = Stored Stroke Check II enable). If enabled but limits are not properly set, disable this check temporarily or correct the limit values.

Disabling stroke check removes safety protection. Only disable for diagnostic purposes and re-enable after correction.

  4. 4

After correcting parameter 1323, perform a controlled test move approaching the negative limit while monitoring POSITION > ABSOLUTE display to verify proper limit enforcement.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Mechanical coupling failure detected

Prevention

  • Regularly verify work offset accuracy
  • Perform reference return after power interruptions
  • Monitor servo system diagnostics during PM
  • Validate program coordinates before production runs

Common Mistakes

  • Adjusting parameter 1323 without considering mechanical limits
  • Ignoring work coordinate system when troubleshooting
  • Assuming physical position matches displayed position
  • Not performing reference return after servo alarms
