Fanuc Alarm 504 - Z Axis Positive Overtravel

Overtravel +Z

Stored stroke check alarm. The axis has exceeded the stored stroke limit +Z as defined in parameter 1320-1327.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc 504 alarm occurs when an axis exceeds the positive software limit defined by stored stroke check III parameter No. 1324. This is a software overtravel limit that prevents the machine from traveling beyond the permitted working envelope on the positive direction of the specified axis.

Safety

  • Jog slowly away from limit
  • Verify position after recovery

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 1324 for the axis indicated in the alarm (n-th axis). Verify the positive limit value matches machine specifications and required working envelope.

  2. 2

Check parameter 1320 bit 3 (STL3) to confirm stored stroke check III is enabled. If enabled but limit is incorrect, record current machine position from POSITION screen (ABSOLUTE coordinates).

  3. 3

Compare parameter 1324 value with parameters 1320 (stroke check enable bits), 1322 (stored stroke check III negative limit), and 1326/1327 (stored stroke check I/II limits) to ensure no conflicts.

Parameter write enable (PWE) must be set via parameter 0000 bit 0 before modifying parameters

  4. 4

If limit needs adjustment, modify parameter 1324 to appropriate value based on machine manufacturer specifications. Reset alarm, return axis to safe position, and verify operation.

Never exceed physical machine travel limits or manufacturer specifications when setting software limits

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter 1324 appears corrupted or cannot be accessed
  • ·Mechanical binding prevents manual axis movement
  • ·Encoder feedback errors accompany overtravel alarm

Prevention

  • Verify work coordinate setup before running new programs
  • Use program simulation to check axis travel limits
  • Implement proper tool length measurement procedures
  • Regular verification of parameter 1324 values during maintenance

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring work coordinate system when setting up jobs
  • Not accounting for tool length compensation in travel calculations
  • Modifying parameter 1324 without understanding machine physical limits
  • Running programs without simulation after setup changes
