Fanuc Alarm 507 - 4th Axis Negative Overtravel

Overtravel -4th

Axis overtravel -4th limit triggered. The machine has reached the software or hardware travel limit in the indicated direction.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc alarm 507 OVER TRAVEL -n (HARDWARE) indicates the n-th axis has physically contacted the negative direction hardware overtravel limit switch (OT-). This is a hard limit condition caused by mechanical motion beyond safe travel limits, limit switch misalignment, faulty switch/wiring, or incorrect parameter settings for stored stroke limits and reference position.

Safety

  • Jog slowly away from limit

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check DIAGNOSIS screen > #300-#307 (DGN for I/O status) to verify which axis limit switch is active. Look for OT- signal for the indicated axis n showing '1' status, confirming hardware switch activation.

  2. 2

Check POSITION screen (ABSOLUTE, MACHINE coordinates) to determine exact axis position. Compare against parameter #1320-#1327 (stored stroke limit negative) to verify axis is beyond expected travel range.

  3. 3

If machine has absolute encoder (serial or Ai), place mode selector to JOG and carefully jog axis in positive direction away from limit switch. Monitor DIAGNOSIS screen to confirm OT- signal turns off as axis clears the switch.

Proceed slowly with manual feed override reduced to 10-25%. Ensure no mechanical obstructions exist before jogging.

  4. 4

After clearing hardware limit, execute reference position return (zero return) for the affected axis to re-establish machine coordinates. Verify reference position parameter #1815 (reference position return check) = 0 or 1, then verify stored stroke check parameters #1320-#1327 are correctly set to prevent recurrence.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder feedback problems persist
  • ·Mechanical binding cannot be resolved
  • ·Servo amplifier shows fault codes
  • ·Hardware limit switches are damaged

Prevention

  • Regular verification of soft limit parameters
  • Proper work coordinate system management
  • Routine reference return procedures
  • Regular mechanical inspection of rotary axis

Common Mistakes

  • Disabling software limits to 'fix' the problem
  • Forcing axis movement without identifying root cause
  • Ignoring position drift warnings
  • Setting soft limits too close to hardware limits
