Fanuc Alarm 509 - INTERFERENCE: -n

Y- Overtravel

A tool moving in the negative direction along the n axis has fouled another tool post (two-path control only).

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 509 INTERFERENCE -n occurs exclusively on dual-path or two-path control systems (turret or gang tooling configurations) when the control detects potential physical interference between tool posts on opposing turrets or paths during negative axis movement. The alarm is triggered by internal collision avoidance logic when the commanded position on one path violates the interference zone defined relative to the other path's current position.

Safety

  • Only jog in opposite direction of overtravel
  • Only jog the axis in the opposite direction of the overtravel.
  • Before jogging, ensure the area around the machine is clear of obstructions and personnel.
  • Be prepared to stop the axis immediately if it continues to move in the wrong direction or encounters resistance.
  • If the overtravel is caused by a mechanical issue, attempting to force the axis may cause further damage.
  • Electrical hazards exist when working with machine tools. Disconnect power to the machine before performing any electrical troubleshooting. Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed.
  • High voltage is present in the drive system. Only qualified personnel should troubleshoot the drive system.
  • Moving machine axes can create pinch points. Keep hands and other body parts clear of moving components.
  • Only jog in the opposite direction of the overtravel to avoid further damage.
  • Ensure all personnel are clear of the machine during movement.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 5431 bit 0 (IFZ). Verify interference checking is enabled and intentional for your application.

  2. 2

Review parameters 5440-5443 which set the interference check area dimensions (X/Z start and end points for first path). Compare values against machine drawings and verify they match actual turret geometry and safe zones.

Changing these parameters requires INPUT ENABLE (parameter write protection OFF) and may affect machine safety. Document original values before modification.

  3. 3

Check parameters 5450-5453 for the second path interference zone. These must create adequate clearance zones accounting for tool length offsets, turret indexing positions, and rapid traverse paths.

  4. 4

After parameter adjustment, perform dry run test with all tools at maximum extension using single block mode to validate clearance zones before resuming production.

Use Feed Hold override and maintain hand on Emergency Stop during validation runs.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Hardware limit switch replacement needed
  • ·Servo drive malfunction confirmed
  • ·PMC ladder modification required

Prevention

  • Regularly verify software travel limits match machine specifications
  • Include interference checking in dual-path programs
  • Validate work coordinate offsets before program execution

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring machine vs work coordinate differences
  • Assuming software limits are correctly set from factory
  • Not checking both tool post positions in dual-path systems
