Fanuc 512 - Spindle parameter error

SPINDLE PARAMETER ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 512: SPINDLE PARAMETER ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 512 indicates a mismatch or invalid configuration in the spindle parameter settings between the CNC control, spindle drive amplifier, and spindle motor. This typically occurs after parameter changes, battery backup failures causing parameter corruption, or when parameters don't match the installed hardware specifications.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Verify spindle motor nameplate data and record motor specifications: pole count, rated RPM, rated current, voltage, and encoder type.

  2. 2

Check parameters 4001-4004 (spindle motor code), 4020-4024 (rated speed/current), and 4002 (pole count) match motor nameplate exactly.

  3. 3

Compare control parameters with spindle drive amplifier DIP switch settings or digital parameter settings for motor type and gear ratio.

Incorrect parameters can cause motor thermal damage or runaway conditions

  4. 4

Correct any mismatched parameters, cycle power on both drive and control, then clear alarm and test spindle at low speed first.
