Fanuc Alarm 428 - SERVO ALARM: n AXIS ENCODER ERROR

SERVO ALARM: n AXIS ENCODER ERROR

Fanuc alarm 428: SERVO ALARM: n AXIS ENCODER ERROR. The encoder (pulse coder) on the specified axis has detected a fault condition. Position feedback cannot be reliably obtained until the encoder issue is resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 428 indicates the servo amplifier has detected an encoder feedback error on the specified axis. This occurs when the position feedback signal from the encoder is abnormal, interrupted, or contains parity/communication errors. Common causes include damaged encoder cables, loose connections at the encoder or amplifier, encoder power supply failure, or internal encoder failure.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine and visually inspect the encoder cable along its entire length, especially in the cable track. Look for kinks, cuts, or areas where the cable has been pinched or abraded.

Always power off before disconnecting encoder cables to prevent damage to encoder circuitry

  2. 2

Check encoder connector at the motor (typically JA7A or similar designation on αi/βi servo motors) and at the amplifier JD1A connector. Ensure connectors are fully seated and locking tabs are engaged. Check for bent pins or contamination.

  3. 3

Perform continuity and insulation resistance test on encoder cable using multimeter. Check shield continuity and verify no short circuits exist between signal lines. Replace cable if any faults detected.

  4. 4

Check servo amplifier LEDs. A-series amplifiers show specific patterns: red ALARM LED lit continuously indicates encoder error. Consult amplifier manual for LED diagnostic codes specific to your αi or βi series amplifier.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier module failure confirmed
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously
  • ·Safety system integration issues

Prevention

  • Maintain proper cable strain relief and routing
  • Perform monthly encoder cable connection inspections
  • Keep encoder faces clean and protected from contamination
  • Maintain parameter backups and change documentation

Common Mistakes

  • Grounding encoder cable shield at both ends
  • Using incorrect encoder resolution parameters
  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
  • Attempting encoder disassembly without proper calibration equipment
