Fanuc Alarm 144 - ILLEGAL PLANE SELECTED

SYSTEM ALARM 144

Fanuc alarm 144: SYSTEM ALARM 144. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 144 occurs when the plane specified for coordinate rotation (G68) does not match the plane used for circular interpolation (G17/G18/G19) or cutter compensation (G41/G42). The system requires both operations to reference the same two-axis plane to calculate correct tool paths and compensations.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the program block prior to alarm. Identify active plane selection command (G17, G18, or G19) and verify G68 coordinate rotation specifies the same plane using I, J, K parameters where I=X-axis rotation, J=Y-axis rotation, K=Z-axis rotation.

  2. 2

Check if G68 was activated without explicit plane selection. Verify G17/G18/G19 is commanded before or within the G68 block. Default plane is controlled by parameter 5400 bit 0 (0=G17, 1=last commanded plane).

  3. 3

If using cutter compensation (G41/G42), ensure the compensation plane matches G68 rotation plane. Navigate to CURRENT SCREEN > PROGRAM to verify active modal G-codes in the modal information display.

  4. 4

Modify program to command matching plane: For X-Y rotation use G17 G68, for Z-X use G18 G68, for Y-Z use G19 G68. Cancel coordinate rotation with G69 before changing planes if necessary.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter changes required beyond operator authority
  • ·Persistent alarm after program corrections
  • ·Machine configuration conflicts

Prevention

  • Always specify plane selection before coordinate rotation
  • Use consistent plane selection throughout program
  • Validate program logic with graphics simulation
  • Document coordinate rotation usage in program headers

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming default plane matches rotation plane
  • Changing plane selection while rotation is active
  • Not canceling previous coordinate rotations
  • Mixing 2D and 3D operations without proper plane management
