Fanuc Alarm 020 - Invalid Arc Radius

Illegal Radius

Fanuc program alarm 020: Illegal Radius. The part program contains an error or illegal condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute. Correct the program to clear this alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 020 occurs when the CNC detects an inconsistency in circular interpolation (G02/G03) commands, typically when the calculated arc radius from the start point to end point differs from the specified radius by more than the tolerance set in parameter 3410. This is most commonly caused by programming errors in IJK values, endpoint coordinates, or R-word specification that result in geometrically impossible arcs.

Safety

  • Arc will not cut

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the G02 or G03 block shown in the alarm display on the CNC screen. Note the current position coordinates and the commanded endpoint coordinates (X, Y, Z values).

  2. 2

Check parameter 3410 (arc radius tolerance) via SYSTEM > PARAM > search for parameter number 3410. Verify the tolerance value - typical values are 500 (0.5mm metric) or 20 (0.020 inch). Lower values make the system more sensitive to radius errors.

  3. 3

Calculate the actual radius discrepancy: measure distance from start point to arc center using IJK values, then measure distance from arc center to endpoint. If difference exceeds parameter 3410 setting, the alarm is correct.

  4. 4

Correct the program by recalculating IJK values or R-word specification, or adjust endpoint coordinates. If the error is within acceptable manufacturing tolerance, temporarily increase parameter 3410 value after management approval.

Increasing parameter 3410 reduces geometric accuracy checking. Document any parameter changes and verify part quality after modification.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter 3410 adjustments don't resolve issue
  • ·Servo positioning accuracy problems detected
  • ·Repeated coordinate system drift occurs

Prevention

  • Verify CAM post-processor arc output settings
  • Regularly check parameter 3410 tolerance value
  • Use program verification tools before production runs
  • Maintain proper machine reference position accuracy

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing absolute vs incremental arc center programming
  • Setting parameter 3410 tolerance too tight
  • Ignoring CAM arc precision settings
  • Not performing reference return after servo alarms
