Fanuc Alarm 003 - Excessive Data Digits

Too Many Digits

Fanuc program alarm 003: Too Many Digits. The part program contains an error or illegal condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute. Correct the program to clear this alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 003 occurs when a G-code program contains numerical data exceeding the maximum allowable number of digits for a specific address. This commonly happens with coordinate values, feed rates, or other numerical parameters that surpass system limits defined in the control parameters. The alarm halts program execution at the block containing the oversized data.

Safety

  • Program will not execute

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Identify the exact program block causing the alarm by checking the CNC display screen for the line number and address code shown with the alarm message.

  2. 2

Review the flagged address data in the program. Check coordinate values against parameter 1004 (input increment) to verify maximum allowable range. For metric systems with 1µm increment, maximum is typically ±99999.999mm (8 digits).

  3. 3

Verify parameter 0 bit 0 (DPI) and parameter 1004 to confirm the input unit setting and calculate the maximum permissible coordinate value for your machine configuration.

  4. 4

Correct the program by reducing the number of digits or adjusting the value to within allowable limits. Alternatively, check if G10 programmable offset or coordinate system shift can be used to reduce the absolute coordinate magnitude.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter limits need modification beyond operator authority
  • ·Recurring alarms after program corrections
  • ·System parameters appear corrupted

Prevention

  • Validate program syntax before loading
  • Use CAM post-processor limits matching machine parameters
  • Implement program verification routines
  • Train operators on FANUC digit limitations

Common Mistakes

  • Copying programs between different machine configurations
  • Using metric values on inch-configured systems
  • Ignoring decimal point parameter settings
  • Exceeding tool magazine capacity in programming
