Fanuc 8 - Interference in canned cycle

INTERFERENCE IN CANNED CYCLE

Fanuc PS program alarm 8: INTERFERENCE IN CANNED CYCLE. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm occurs when a canned cycle (G73, G74, G76, G81-G89) encounters geometric interference between programmed positions, typically when the initial plane (R point) is positioned below the hole bottom (Z depth), or when retract clearances create impossible tool paths. The control calculates that executing the programmed cycle would result in a collision or logical impossibility in the tool motion sequence.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Locate the active canned cycle block in the program (G73, G74, G76, G81-G89) displayed on the alarm screen or current program position.

  2. 2

Verify the R value (retract/rapid plane) and Z value (hole depth) in the canned cycle block. In absolute mode (G90), R must be greater than Z for downward drilling (e.g., R5.0 Z-10.0 is correct, R-10.0 Z5.0 is wrong).

Check if G90/G91 absolute or incremental mode is active, as this affects how R and Z are interpreted.

  3. 3

Correct the R or Z value so that R point is above the Z depth with adequate clearance (typically 0.1" or 2-5mm minimum).

  4. 4

Reset the alarm (RESET button), return to program start or safe position, and test cycle in single block mode with feed rate override at 0% initially.

Ensure tool is clear of workpiece before restarting program.
