Siemens 28004 - NCU link: NCU of the link network is not on the bus

NCU link: NCU of the link network is not on the bus

Error message of the NCU link module. When the NCU link was powered up, the local NCU (indicated by the alarm) detected that the NCU with the number in the alarm parameter was not on the bus although it should be connected according to the MD settings. This fault in the link can have various causes: - Defective hardware. - The machine data which configure the NCU link are not identical on all NCUs. - An identical interpolator cycle time has not been selected on all NCUs Control reaction: NC not ready. Channel not ready. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.

Root Cause Summary

SINUMERIK alarm 28004 SOS Active indicates the safety system has triggered an emergency shutdown due to critical safety violations. This alarm activates when safety-related functions detect conditions that could endanger personnel or equipment, requiring immediate system halt and comprehensive safety verification before restart.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Check E-STOP Button Status

Verify all emergency stop buttons are released and not mechanically stuck. Check HMI diagnostics screen under Service > Diagnostics > Safety for E-STOP status.

Never bypass emergency stop circuits for testing purposes

  2. 2

    Verify Safety Relay Chain

Access PLC diagnostics via HMI Service menu and check safety relay inputs. Monitor DB31 safety interface signals for proper 24V levels.

Use oscilloscope to check for intermittent safety signal dropouts

  3. 3

    Test Safety Circuit Continuity

With system powered down, measure continuity through complete E-STOP chain including all series-connected safety contacts and monitoring relays.

  4. 4

    Reset Safety System

After verifying all E-STOP buttons are released, perform safety system reset via HMI Machine > Reset or use NC/PLC Reset function key.

Service Recommendedmedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Safety system modifications required
  • ·F-CPU hardware replacement needed
  • ·Safety program changes required
  • ·Unable to identify fault source after basic checks

Prevention

  • Regular safety system testing per machine manual
  • Keep safety switch actuators properly aligned
  • Maintain clean light curtain optics
  • Perform periodic safety circuit continuity checks
  • Update safety program documentation after modifications

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting to bypass safety circuits
  • Ignoring intermittent safety faults
  • Not following proper safety reset sequence
  • Modifying safety logic without proper certification
  • Failing to test safety systems after maintenance
