Okuma OSP Alarm D 4711 - Spindle motor not ready to start

Spindle motor not ready to start

A spindle start command was given before the spindle drive finished its power-up self-check and signaled ready. The drive needs a few seconds after power-on or after a level A alarm reset before it can accept a start command. It can also mean the drive never sent its ready signal because of a wiring or drive unit fault.

Common Causes

  • Spindle start commanded within a few seconds of power-on or a level A alarm reset
  • Ready signal wiring between the spindle drive unit and the NC is loose, broken, or misconnected
  • Spindle motor drive unit fault preventing it from reaching the ready state

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = The start command went to the 1st spindle before it was ready.; code 2 = The start command went to the 2nd spindle before it was ready.; code 3 = The start command went to the 3rd spindle before it was ready.; code 4 = The start command went to the 4th spindle before it was ready.
  2. 2Read the code to identify the spindle: 1 = 1st, 2 = 2nd, 3 = 3rd, 4 = 4th spindle.
  3. 3After turning power on or resetting a level A alarm, wait several seconds before issuing a spindle start (M03/M04) and confirm the alarm does not recur.
  4. 4If the alarm persists even with a proper delay, check whether that spindle's drive unit is sending its operation-ready signal to the NC (drive status LEDs or the NC input display).
  5. 5If the ready signal is missing, inspect the wiring and connectors between the drive unit and the NC for loose pins or damage; lock out power and allow the drive bus to discharge before reseating connectors.
  6. 6If wiring is good and the drive still never reports ready, the motor drive unit itself is suspect; record the alarm number and code and contact Okuma service.
