Okuma OSP Alarm P 0892 - MCS Motor overload

MCS Motor overload

The MCS drive's overload protection tripped because the motor load stayed above the allowed limit for too long. The object field names the axis involved, or is blank when the spindle motor overloaded. The control is protecting the motor from thermal damage, so the root cause of the excess load must be found before restarting.

Common Causes

  • Cutting conditions too aggressive for the motor (excessive feed, depth of cut, or spindle load)
  • Mechanical binding or excessive friction on the named axis (ball screw, guideway, bearings)
  • Faulty motor or incorrect servo data file loaded for the axis

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code YYYYZZZZ = YYYY identifies the overload protection curve that tripped; ZZZZ is the accumulated load data at the moment the overload was detected
  2. 2Note the axis name in the object field and record the YYYYZZZZ code: YYYY identifies which protection curve tripped and ZZZZ is the accumulated load data at the trip point.
  3. 3Let the motor cool, then check the recent program for heavy cuts on that axis and reduce feed rate or depth of cut to bring load back within the motor rating.
  4. 4Move the named axis by hand (power off, lockout applied) or jog it lightly and feel for binding; inspect the ball screw, guideways and lubrication on that axis.
  5. 5Verify the correct servo data file is loaded for this axis/motor combination; a mismatched file can cause false overload detection.
  6. 6If the load is normal and the mechanics are free, suspect the motor itself; have the motor checked or replaced before returning to production.
